Rich Block, Poor Block: How Do Neighborhoods In San Rafael Compare?

What are the annual median household incomes in different parts of town?

Drive through San Rafael and you might notice that some neighborhoods are more affluent than others. But just how wide is the disparity between different parts of town?

A new data-based website, Rich Blocks, Poor Blocks provides some answers to that question. The site uses U.S. census information compiled from the 2007-2011 American Community Survey to show median household income and monthly rents by census tract.

The highest neighborhoods in San Rafael are on the east side of town overlooking San Pablo Strait, which report median incomes of more than $143,000 a year.

The neighborhoods to the south end of San Rafael, from Canal Street to Highway 101 and Bellam Boulevard are between $30,000 and $46,000.

As you go north, the median incomes climb to $59,000 to $64,000 a year.

In the very north end of town, near Terra Linda-Sleepy Hollow Divide Northern Preserve, households make about $100,000 annually.

The range for median household income in California is $28,000 to $125,000 a year. The statewide middle-class income range is $53,264 to $68,300.
