How San Rafael Police Caught A Scooter Thief Red-Handed In Their Own Lobby

After reviewing security footage, police identified a suspect believed to have stolen a scooter parked in front of a business.

SAN RAFAEL, CA — A man suspected of stealing an electric scooter from outside a downtown business was arrested in the lobby of the San Rafael Police Department Thursday, after riding the stolen scooter directly to his appointment with officers, police said.

On Monday, the department opened a theft case on the man, who was accused of stealing the scooter while it was parked in front of a downtown business. Officers reviewed security footage of the incident, which "clearly showed the suspect," police said.

On Tuesday, the man returned to the police department, "as scheduled," and this time while riding the stolen scooter to his appointment, police said.

The man, who was not named, was arrested and the scooter was recovered. Police said it will be returned to its owner.

The suspect was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of felony grand theft.
