San Rafael Woman Injured in Head-On Crash on Hwy. 1 in West Marin

Driver rounded a bend on the road when she saw a car coming right at her and the two cars collided, according to the CHP.

A 49-year-old San Rafael woman was injured in a head-on crash on Hwy. 1 just south of Muir Beach in West Marin Tuesday morning, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Marianne Del Aguila was driving her 1998 Ford Ranger north on Hwy. 1 at around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, and as she navigated a turn in the road, a 1997 Ford Escort being driven by 46-year-old Riley James of Berkeley was coming right at her in the northbound lane, officer Andrew Barclay said. It was unclear why James was driving on the wrong side of the road, he said.

Del Aguila told CHP officers that she was unable to avoid the Escort and the cars collided head-on, coming to rest and blocking both lanes.

Del Aguila was taken to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Terra Linda with moderate injuries as a result of the collision, Barclay said. James and 33-year-old San Rafael resident Cesar Marroquin, who was a passenger in Del Aguila's car, were not injured in the incident.

Hwy. 1 was closed for around 30 minutes because of the incident.

Barclay said that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
