Saturday's Powerball Jackpot Reaches $600 Million

Residents of California can try their luck in the state's brand new game.

That’s the jackpot for the Saturday night drawing of Powerball, the newest game from the California Lottery. After no one picked all six winning numbers, the new Powerball prize Saturday's drawing is now $600 million, which makes it the highest Powerball jackpot ever — and the second-highest U.S. lottery jackpot.

With the introduction of Powerball to the state on April 8, California became the 43rd state to to sell tickets.

In the history of Powerball, the highest jackpot reached $587.5 million, making this Saturday’s jackpot the second highest. According to the CA Lottery, the Powerball jackpot could get even higher before the drawing. Just a year ago, the Mega Millions jackpot reached $656 million. 

Marin has had a few lucky winners of smaller lottery prizes in recent years. IN March 2012, a group of 11 employees from Stefano's pizzeria locations in Mill Valley, Corte Madera and Novato, as well Rocco's Pizza in Mill Valley, purchased 1,200 California Lottery tickets throughout Marin, including a winning tickets at Jolly King Liquors in Mill Valley, and won more than $308,000 collectively.

Five months later, a winning Mega Millions ticket worth more than $500,000 was sold at Colonial Liquors in Kentfield.

Powerball tickets are $2 and the game is played in 43 states, including Florida, Texas, California and New York. You can buy tickets until 7 p.m. PT for the 7:59 p.m. drawing. Buy tickets online here, or search for a local retailer.

Until Saturday, the largest Powerball jackpot was $587.5 million and was won on Nov. 28, 2012, in Arizona and Missouri.
