Seasonal King Tides Ahead For Marin County
Winter tides are on the horizon and county leaders are sharing a few reminders for neighbors living in areas with a history of flooding.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — Marin County leaders are sharing a few reminders about handling flooding with seasonal high tides forecast to arrive by mid-November.
"During the hot summer months, it can be easy to forget that winter brings rain and flooding to Marin County," the county said in a news release. "Tide-related flooding can happen whether it is raining or not, but the flooding can increase significantly if elevated tides occur during a storm."
King tides can cause flooding along shoreline communities and over low-lying roads, and officials noted impacts can be pronounced during tidal surges caused by storms and in communities already seeing the effects of rising sea levels.

"Coastal communities and areas historically susceptible to flooding have a higher chance of being impacted," the county said. "Some of those locations are North San Pedro Road through China Camp in unincorporated San Rafael, Greenwood Cove Drive in Tiburon, Lucky Drive in Greenbrae, Redwood Highway at Greenbrae Boardwalk, Marin City, and the Manzanita Park & Ride lot (a Caltrans property) near Tam Junction."
The Department of Public Works recommends drivers allow extra time for travel during king tides and plan alternate routes to avoid flooded roads, where even a few inches of water can be enough to stall a vehicle.

The county also recommends homeowners take steps to reduce flooding risks to their property, including clearing dead leaves from driveway pipes, rooftop gutters, and storm drains and placing them in compost bins. Officials said neighbors in flood-prone areas should also test their sump pumps, stock up on sandbags, and brush up on other preparedness recommendations.
