Wednesday Is the First Day of Spring – Brief Rain Then Plenty of Sun

With longer days ahead, a brief shower Wednesday is expected to turn into five days of great weather in San Rafael.

It may be hard to believe, but Spring hasn't quite sprung.

Wednesday marks the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere and the first day of Spring.

Of course, San Rafael have already logged plenty of spring-like, sunshine-filled days in 2013. The mild winter has resulted in below-normal rainfall and bright bursts of flowers in town — especially the trees with white flowers throughout downtown. Add your photos of flowers around town to the above slideshow.

The equinox means more daylight, warmer temperatures and the rebirth of flora and fauna, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. The word equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning “equal night,” according to the almanac. Days and nights are approximately equal, and the sun rises and sets due east and west.

Spring also means Easter (March 31) and Passover (which starts March 25) is right around the corner and vegetable garden-planting time has almost arrived.

Spring will last three months until June 21, and summer will carry on until the autumnal equinox on Sept. 22 at 4:44 p.m, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.
