SAN RAMON, CA — San Ramon kids have a new present just in time for the holidays: a brand new playground.

The San Ramon Public Services Division announced the reopening of Ramona Park, a formerly wooden playground that had been open since 2008. The previous wooden playground required costly maintenance due to splintering and wear, so the city decided to replace it entirely with a new train-themed play structure with a number of new features, including:

  • Separate play areas for ages 2-5 and ages 5-12.
  • Interactive play panels
  • Slides, swings, climbing walls, and more.
  • Accessible features for children with special needs.
  • ADA-approved engineered wood surface.

Ramona Park opened in 1906 as a 10-acre picnic spot along the Southern Pacific Railroad, now the Iron Horse Trail. Back then, special trains brought visitors from San Francisco to enjoy the San Ramon Valley. The new playground pays homage to this history.
