San Ramon Skating Rink To Stay Open Until At Least The End Of 2022
The 47-year-old Golden Skate rink was set to close Sunday, but postponed following a surge of new skaters.

SAN RAMON, CA — The Golden Skate, a 47-year-old San Ramon skating rink that is one of just four remaining indoor skating rinks in the Bay Area, said that it will remain open “indefinitely” following an outpouring of public support.
Owner Hassan Sharifi announced in October 2021 that he planned to close the rink, citing “enormous financial damages” in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rink was closed from March 2020 until May 2021, and planned to close July 31, 2022.
Last year, the San Ramon City Council approved Sharifi’s proposal to build 47 townhouses on the 3.5-acre site, which will be known as the Windflower Fields Townhomes. Sharifi told the San Francisco Chronicle that he plans to keep the rink open until he finds a developer to build those townhouses, or a buyer who could run the rink. As of now, no building permits have been issued.

San Ramon City Planner Cindy Yee told The Chronicle that Sharifi has three years to find a developer for the site, but can request an extension of up to three more years.
People have flocked to the rink since it announced it was closing. The announcement spurred extensive coverage in the local media and on social media, where many users shared nostalgic memories of a rink that has been open since the 70s.

“The over-whelming response from our local patrons, Bay Area adult skaters and our local leaders and friends has caused us to reconsider closing The Golden Skate at this juncture,” the Golden Skate said Wednesday on its website. “Our staff has dedicated themselves to staying and enjoying the joy and happiness of so many young and old people visiting our rink on a regular basis. We will not cease operation at the end of this month and instead plan to remain open through at least the end of 2022.”
