2 Youths Shot While Riding In LA Driverless Taxi

Two youths were shot while riding in a Waymo driverless taxi Sunday night.

SANTA MONICA, CA — Two minors were injured when they were shot at while riding in a Waymo driverless taxi in Santa Monica Sunday night, according to police.

The shooting occurred at around 11:40 p.m. near Second Street and Broadway. One victim was shot in the arm and the other was shot in the body, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.

"At the time of the shooting, the victims were passengers in an autonomous rideshare vehicle when the suspect approached on foot and fired multiple rounds into the vehicle before fleeing the scene," Lt. Lewis Gilmour said. "Preliminary information indicates the shooting was a targeted and isolated incident that followed a verbal altercation earlier in the evening between the victims and the suspect."

The victims, whose ages were not released, were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They were in stable condition Monday morning, according to police.

Video from the scene captured by ABC 7 shows three bullet holes in the passenger window of the vehicle.

Waymo issued a statement saying they are coordinating with police on the investigation, the Santa Monica Daily Press reported.

Waymo recently expanded its operations across Los Angeles after an initial launch in the region last year, which included Santa Monica.
