Sustainable Student Sculpture Contest Winners Announced

The Resource Recovery & Recycling Division in collaboration with the Office of Sustainability and the Environment are pleased to announce the winners of this year's Sustainable Student Art Sculpture Contest!  

Did you know local area school children diligently worked on art sculptures crafted from the items we typically throw away? Open to all Santa Monica Schools, entrants in the competition were urged to use art as a way to illustrate the “extended life” of products all around us.  For weeks students worked on sculptures that fit into this year's theme: "Zero Waste—Imagine a Waste Free Santa Monica."

Using the knowledge gained from in-class presentations on the concept of zero waste, students were able to Rethink, Repurpose, and Reuse materials found in their everyday environments that are typically discarded.  While all students are winners, a few have been chosen to receive special awards as noted below.

 If you'd like to have an up close and personal look at their masterpieces crafted from bottles, cans, buttons, and other unique materials please visit City Hall June 4th through the 8th to see the prize winning sculptures.
