Common Sense for City Council

My letter to residents today...

As a second-generation native son of Santa Monica, I know why I stayed here, why my mother was born here and is still here, and why all of us want our city to live up to its motto, "Fortunate People in a Fortunate Land." The Santa Monica City Council is elected to represent Santa Monica residents, and I firmly believe that YOU, the residents, matter. I have spent the last 18 years as a volunteer Santa Monica Commissioner (Recreation & Parks and Arts), six years as an Advisory Committee Chair for SMMUSD, and have dedicated decades to the youth, teens, and seniors in this town as a passionate volunteer with local charities. I have been an independent small business owner for over forty years. I know how to balance a budget, and I know better than to treat our taxpayers' valuable dollars like Monopoly money.

Your present representatives on City Council have lost their way. In fact, in this election, three of the four incumbents I am running against "neglected" to put the title "incumbent" after their names on the ballot. Aren't you tired of council members who ignore our neighborhoods' needs and favor outside developers over those who live here?

We suffer through disturbances that arise from the tragic circumstances of rampant homelessness in our town - untreated mental illness, petty crime, public indecency, assaults, and more. I have a plan to reduce homelessness dramatically. We can do this together.

I have a plan! Join my campaign now!

I will listen to you. I promise to hear your voices. The residents of Santa Monica have invested so much in their neighborhoods and must be respected. I do not believe that high rises, massive developments, streets that have become canyons of tall buildings, and roads that our families can't easily navigate, are why my grandparents moved to Santa Monica in the 1920s. The outside developers who "own" the incumbents favor high rises over parks, and congestion and density over our beachside town's breathability.

My family certainly did not settle in Santa Monica to be plagued by rampant crime or to be afraid to walk on our streets. We must restore public safety to our city. That is the highest priority our local government has. Beneath the cacophony of significant crime, burglaries, assaults, and robberies, the dream of Santa Monica is evaporating. We need City Council members with backbone, who are firmly committed to restoring our city's Soul and Safety.

Sunday, May 31st, was the darkest day in our city's 145-year history. It was a field day for looters. Our police department tear-gassed peaceful protestors on Ocean Avenue while the looters ran amuck through our downtown businesses. No plan that day and no responsibility now! It's now 3 1/2 months later—no incident report or investigation. The Chief of Police and Interim City Manager still have jobs? Incredible! Your City Council? They have shirked responsibility.

Had Enough? It's time for a change!

I Will Support Slow Measured Growth and Will Reduce Traffic. I will stop the rampant growth that has led to gentrification and the loss of our city's diversity. Adaptive reuse of existing buildings and increased rental assistance for our vulnerable senior population is a high priority. In a sustainable city, new construction can only begin after ensuring that infrastructure and natural resources can support it.

We will Rebirth our City's Economy without relying on the cyclical ebbs and flows of tourism. We will restructure our city government without sky-high salaries, new taxes, or monumental fees with your help. I will use common sense, yours and mine, to Stop the Waste in our City Hall.

Rent Control is the law. No city council can change that fact. I was able to stay in Santa Monica as a young teacher because of my rent-controlled unit. Renters' rights must be protected. I led the effort to landmark twenty apartment houses on San Vicente Blvd to preserve historic housing and ensure reasonable rents for my neighbors.

For those of you who own a business in our town, know that you are valued. The interminable regulations in Santa Monica seem designed to put you out of business. We need you to succeed! Santa Monica must become an incubator of small businesses.

Its time to retake our city!

Unlike the incumbents, whose campaigns are supported by developers and PAC's, my grassroots campaign support comes from each of you, my neighbors in Santa Monica. We are in a fight for the Soul and Safety of our town. Please contribute today!
