Coyote Spike In Santa Monica Due To Palisades Fire: Officials

Coyotes displaced by the Palisades Fire may have moved south into urban areas, experts say.

SANTA MONICA, CA — Amid a recent uptick in coyote sightings in Santa Monica — which experts believe is due to the Palisades Fire — city officials issued tips for how residents can safely coexist with the wild canines.

"Residents have reported an increase in coyote sightings in recent weeks, particularly north of Montana Avenue. Experts believe this increase is linked to the Palisades Fire, which devastated large areas of the Santa Monica Mountains and displaced numerous wildlife species, including coyotes. As a result, these animals have ventured deeper into urban neighborhoods in search of food and shelter," city officials wrote in a release.

"Coyotes are naturally wary of humans, but as they adapt to urban environments, it becomes increasingly important for communities to understand their behavior and take proactive steps to prevent conflicts."
