Firefighters Tackling Live Blaze in Training Exercise
Live burn exercise tacking place over three days at building at Colorado and Fourth in downtown Santa Monica.
Firefighters will start on Saturday a three-day live burn training exercise at a downtown building slated for demolition.
The training exercises will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. at 430 Colorado Ave., according to Santa Monica Fire Training Chief Jose Torres.
"This training opportunity is rare due to the fact that we do not get to use live fire in a structure for training purposes very often," Torres said. "The process is extensive and the buildings are hard to acquire."

The building at 430 Colorado Ave. is slated to be demolished to make way for a new Expo light rail station. Eastbound Colorado between Fourth and Fifth streets is currently closed because of construction.
"The three-day live fire training will task Santa Monica firefighters with realistic fire scenarios to hone their fire suppression strategies, tactics, and command functions and skills," Torres said.
