Large Sinkhole Shuts Down Venice Boulevard

VENICE, CA — Crews were working to repair a water main break Tuesday after a large sinkhole opened up on Venice Boulevard.

Fire crews were dispatched at around 3:20 a.m. Tuesday in response to flooding reported on the 200 block of North Venice Boulevard, just east of Pacific Coast Highway near the Venice Canals, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power reported that a 16-inch water main had broken, impacting 34 water customers.

Footage aired by KTLA showed crews working on the main inside a massive hole that had opened up in the road.

Service was expected to be restored by 4 p.m., according to DWP.

Both traffic lanes on North Venice Boulevard were closed between Alberta Avenue and Canal Street, according to Mayor Karen Bass.

The mayor urged motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
