Man With Knife Near Santa Monica College In Custody, Police Say

A man suspected of pulling a knife on someone was taken into custody near Santa Monica College Wednesday, police say.

SANTA MONICA, CA — A man suspected of pulling a knife on a resident near Santa Monica College was in a standoff with police and later taken into custody Wednesday morning, officials told Patch.

Officers responded to the 1905 Pico, The Manor, which is a residential facility for mentally ill and disabled adults, Santa Monica Police Lt. Rudy Flores told Patch.

James Latham, 36, was a former resident of the location and is suspected of showing up at the location where he had an ongoing dispute with a current resident, and allegedly pulled out a small pocket knife, brandishing it at the resident, police said.

Police were called and the suspect immediately fled, police said.

Officers tried to contact the suspect, who was uncooperative, police said.

The Department of Mental Health and Crisis Negotiation Team representatives made several attempts to contact the suspect, police said.

"The street was shut down for the safety of the suspect and public," police said.

He was later taken into custody without further incident.
