SANTA MONICA, CA — One person was injured in a fire at a Santa Monica hotel Sunday, authorities said.

Santa Monica firefighters were assisted by firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department in extinguishing the blaze that burned part of the Huntley Hotel, at 1111 2nd Street in Santa Monica. The fire started about 12:10 a.m. in several large trash bins that caught fire behind the hotel, said Santa Monica fire Capt. Patrick Nulty.

The fire spread, burning the exterior of the second-, third- and fourth-floor units of the hotel, he said.

The flames were extinguished in about 30 minutes. Most of the fire damage was to the building's exterior and some upper balconies. A sprinkler system also aided in the battle, but caused substantial water damage to four floors.

A person was treated at the scene and transported to a hospital in good condition, Nulty said. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by SMFD's arson task force, he said.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call SMPD Detective Blake Cooper at 310-458-8478.
