SANTA MONICA, CA —Santa Monica's Pacific Wheel will light up for International Women's Day Monday night in purple, green and white.

International Women's Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world. It was first observed in 1911.

The Pacific Wheel will be lit in purple to signify justice and dignity, green to symbolize hope and white to represent unity. These colors originated from the Women's Social and Political Union in the United Kingdom in 1908.

The celebration starts at sunset just before 6 p.m. at the Pacific Park, 380 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica. It can be watched online at https://www.pacpark.com/live.

The Pacific Wheel is the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel featuring 174,000 LED lights that are mounted on the Ferris wheel’s 40 spokes and two hubs. The Ferris wheel’s lighting system features 16.7 million color value combinations. The programming and display software present imaging up to 24 frames per second to display dynamic, custom, computer-generated lighting entertainment.
