Plaster Blisters, Temporarily Closes Splash Pool

The pool is expected to reopen the weekend of March 2.

Ouch! Stepping on plaster in swimming pools is already rough. At the splash pool at the Santa Monica Swim Center, the plaster was bubbling and cracking, forming sharp edges.

It's expected to reopen the first weekend of March after it temporarily closed Feb. 2 so no one would get hurt, disrupting the approximately 500-800 swimmers who use it daily, said Amy Cramer, Principal Supervisor for the city's Aquatics Center.

Crews were replastering this week. The repairs are expected to cost $44,850.

The blisters were discovered Jan. 31 as crews pulled off the pool's cover to open for the spring season. The pool had been closed for the winter since December.

The fitness pool will remain open during the repairs.
