Registration Is Open For Santa Monica Preschools, Kindergarten

It's time to get your youngest Santa Monica students enrolled in preschool, transitional kindergarten and kindergarten.

SANTA MONICA, CA — Registration is now open for Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District's 2022-2023 preschool, transitional kindergarten and kindergarten programs.

The district will offer a range of programming for its youngest students. Registration will happen at local SMMUSD schools, where parents will need to provide certain documentation like immunization records, birth certificates and verification of residency.

Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten

To help decide what transitional kindergarten and kindergarten is right for your kids, the district will host a virtual informational event on Jan. 27 for residents to learn more about each school. The informational day for the Santa Monica Alternative School house will be Feb. 1. Learn more and register for the informational events using this link.

Kindergarten programs will be offered at every school in the district. Transitional kindergarten and Bridges transitional kindergarten will be offered at Webster Elementary in Malibu and at McKinley Elementary, Rogers Elementary, Grant Elementary and Roosevelt Elementary.

Bridges transitional kindergarten is a neighborhood program that is aligned with the SMMUSD curriculum. Learn more about Bridges transitional kindergarten on SMMUSD's website.

Gov. Gavin Newsom adopted a universal transitional kindergarten program for the state in October. For SMMUSD, the adoption of this program will change the birth date requirements for transitional kindergarten students. Check out this chart with birthdate cutoffs before enrolling your students.

Preschool

Preschool programming will run at John Adams Middle School, Lincoln Child Development Center, McKinley Elementary School, John Muir Elementary, Washington West Preschool and Rogers Elementary in Santa Monica. In Malibu, preschool programming will be held at Webster Elementary.

Full- and part-day programming will be offered with a fee, but free preschool is offered to qualifying families. Contact Child Development Services at 310-399-5865 to see if your family qualifies for free programming.

Santa Monica residents can also enroll their preschool-aged children in one of the district's Seaside neighborhood preschool programs, which will run at Grant Elementary, Franklin Elementary and McKinley Elementary. In Malibu, preschool programs will run at Webster Elementary.

The Seaside programs are meant to foster community and family engagement with a child's education and allow for an easy transition into elementary school, according to the district. Learn more about the program on SMMUSD's website.

For families interested in dual-language learning, Edison Language Academy will offer a Spanish language preschool program.
