Santa Monica City Council To Divest From Any Russian-Tied Assets

SANTA MONICA, CA — Santa Monica City Council this week announced they are directing the City Manager to divest any city investments that contain Russian assets.

In its weekly meeting Tuesday night, Santa Monica City Council named Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy an honorary citizen of Santa Monica.

The city of Santa Monica joins a number of local leaders, government officials and companies pulling back business with Russia, including Airbnb, which suspended services in Russia and Belarus on the popular home-share app. Tech giant Apple stopped selling its products in Russia. Meta said Facebook would block content from Sputnik and RT, Russian news outlets, and Twitter also announced plans to limit access to Russian state media content.

Goldman Sachs announced Thursday that they would leave Russia, the first major U.S. bank to leave following sanctions put on Russia, the New York Times reports.

Russia launched an attack from multiple sides of Ukraine on February 24. Since the war started, schools, hospitals and residential buildings have been destroyed in Ukraine, with many civilians killed and injured in the invasion.

Nearly 1,000 towns and villages were without water, electricity and heat this week, according to Mykhailo Podoliak, an advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
