Santa Monica College Professor Breaks Pacific Crest Trail Record

The 30-year-old Santa Monica resident reached the trail's end in 59 days, 8 hours and 59 minutes.

Powered only by his vegan diet, Josh Garrett trekked the 2,655-mile Pacific Coast Trail from Mexico to Canada in less than 60 days, marking a new record.

Garrett, a Santa Monica College professor and cross country coach, hiked up to 45 miles a day, at one point collapsing from heat stroke in Southern California's San Felipe Hills, according to USA Today.

The 30-year-old Santa Monica resident reached the trail's end in 59 days, 8 hours and 59 minutes, beating a record of 61 days and 17 hours set two days earlier by Heather Anderson of Bellingham, Wash., the newspaper reported.
