Santa Monica Place Wins Design Award

The VIVA "Best-of-the-Best" Awards recognizes the most outstanding examples of shopping center design and development, marketing sustainability and community service.

Santa Monica Place was recognized for its design at the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) this weekend in Las Vegas.

Santa Monica Place, which was purchased by Macerich in 1999, received the 2013 Best-of-the-Best VIVA Global Design and Development Award, according to Market Watch.

"Our vision was to completely transform the property from a traditional mall into a new world-class outdoor destination that would attract the world's top retailers," Art Coppola, Chairman and CEO of Macerich, said. "That's exactly what we have accomplished."

The center has plans to open The Art of Shaving, Camper, Kate Spade New York, and LeSportsac this summer.

Santa Monica Place opened in August 2010 as a revitalized version of the former Santa Monica Mall.
