SANTA MONICA, CA — As police continue to investigate the death of a woman who was run over by an impaired driver on the beach, authorities are trying to locate several good samaritans who rushed to the woman's aid but left before police arrived, the Santa Monica Police Department said Friday,

"Officers of the SMPD are seeking several individuals who heroically attempted to dig the victim‘s body from underneath a vehicle stuck in the sand. They left prior to police arrival and may know information that can help with the investigation," police said.

Police responded to the 1400 block of the beach at around 11:30 p.m. Oct. 17 for a report of a vehicle stuck in the sand. At the scene, officers found a woman wedged beneath an SUV, according to police.

The Santa Monica Fire Department attempted to rescue the woman by lifting the vehicle, but she was declared dead at the scene, police said.

The victim was later identified by the Medical Examiner as Sherese Allen, 34, who died from traumatic asphyxia.

Witnesses said the driver of the SUV had been driving in circles at high speeds on the sand when he ran over Allen, according to police.

The driver, Yuyang Sun, 21, of Arcadia was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence, reckless driving and gross vehicular manslaughter, police said.
