Santa Monica schools will start two days later this August.

SANTA MONICA, CA — Students in Santa Monica get two extra days to soak up summer before school picks up again.

Schools in Santa Monica will push back the start date in August as teachers continue preparations to begin distance learning this fall.

In a move approved by the school board Thursday night, the district decided schools in Santa Monica will start on August 24. June 11 will be the last day of the school year.

SMMUSD district officials announced earlier this month that the school start date could be pushed back. It's part of the Memorandum of Understanding with the SMM Classroom Teachers Association.

The two extra days will give teachers more time to continue training and preparations for distance learning, district officials said. Teachers have been preparing throughout the summer for the transition.
