Santa Monicans to Decide on City's High-Rise Future

The Santa Monica City Council voted to place the Land Use Voter Empowerment initiative on the November ballot.

Santa Monica, CA -- Voters will have the chance to decide whether to allow high-rise development in downtown Santa Monica this Novemeber.

The Santa Monica City Council unanimously agreed to place the Land Use Voter Empowerment, aka LUV, on the November ballot. The city council essentially had no choice to do so. Proponents of the measure had enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. The council's only other option is to bypass the vote and enact it as law.

Under the proposed measure, voters would need to approve any new construction taller than 32 feet or two stories. Even some "slow-growth" proponents on the council think the measure is too stringent, Curbed Los Angeles reported

"Thirty-two feet is just too drastic," Councilman Tony Vazquez said.
