SMPD Officer Hospitalized After Being Hit By Alleged Drunk Driver

According to authorities, the officer sustained significant injuries, but she remains in stable condition at a local hospital.

SANTA MONICA, CA — A Santa Monica Traffic Services Officer was hospitalized after she was struck by an alleged drunk driver on Wednesday, authorities said.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department, patrol officers responded to a report of a traffic collision with injuries involving an officer at the intersection of Yale Street and Santa Monica Boulevard.

When officers arrived, they found the officer had been ejected from her scooter and was suffering significant injuries, police said. The officer was transported to a local hospital and remains in stable condition, according to SMPD.

"Our hearts are with our injured employee as she begins the long road to healing. This is a hard reminder that we are all at risk, anytime and anywhere, when drivers choose to use drugs or drink and drive," SMPD said in a statement.

Preliminary investigation results suggested that a black Audi was traveling westbound on Santa Monica Boulevard when it struck the scooter as it crossed at a green light.

By policy, the California Highway Patrol was called to handle the investigation and reporting of the crash. The Los Angeles Police Department Pacific Division assisted with a DUI exam on the Audi driver.

According to the LAPD, the driver was arrested on suspicion of Felony Driving Under the Influence.

Santa Monica Police said if residents see someone who appears to driving under the influence, they should call 911.
