Man Fatally Shot In San Diego's East County

LEMON GROVE, CA —A man was shot and killed in San Diego's East County, authorities said Sunday.

Deputies were in the 3000 block of Lemon Grove Avenue when they heard several gunshots at 11:34 p.m. Saturday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

"While checking the business area, they were told there was a group arguing in the 3100 block of School Lane," Lt. Michael Krugh said.

Deputies checked the area and found Diego Omar Valera-Trujillo, 21, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Krugh said. The Spring Valley resident was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Homicide investigators identified Joshua Gonzalez, 27, as the suspect, Krugh said. He was arrested around 5:30 p.m. Sunday near his home in the 8200 block of Lincoln Avenue in Lemon Grove. He was expected to be booked on suspicion of murder.

"Sheriff's homicide investigators are still working to gather more information to determine the circumstances and motivation behind this death,"Krugh said. "The investigation is ongoing."
