A man who was killed in a suspected DUI crash in the Santa Cruz Mountains west of Saratoga on Thursday was identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office today as Oscar Elias Alvarado, of San Jose.
Alvarado, 29, was a passenger in a 2001 Volkswagen Golf driven by 30-year-old Edson Marin, also a San Jose resident, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Marin was driving north on Skyline Boulevard at an unsafe speed at about 7:35 p.m. when the car veered off the pavement near Charcoal Road, hit a tree, then went down a 60-foot embankment and struck a fence, the CHP reported.
The passenger side of the car was badly damaged when it hit the tree, CHP officials said.
Marin was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI and driving with a suspended license, according to the CHP.
