Infineon Hosts 'Donut Practice' in World Record Attempt

The practice is a special night of the weekly "Sonoma Drift" program, which provides drifters with "a safe, legal and controlled environment" in which to develop their driving abilities.

More than 40 drifters -- of the motorsport variety -- are taking
to Sonoma's Infineon Raceway this afternoon to hone their skills before
attempting to break a world record for the most cars performing donuts
simultaneously.

The practice is a special night of the weekly "Sonoma Drift"
program, which provides drifters with "a safe, legal and controlled
environment" in which to develop their driving abilities.
The official attempt to break the current Guinness World Record in
the category -- which stands at 57 cars -- will take place in March during
the opening night of the 2012 Sonoma Drift season.
A spokeswoman for the raceway said today's practice is also meant
to encourage more drivers to join in the attempt to break the record.
At least one other practice has been held on a smaller scale about
a month ago, she said, but this afternoon's event is really the only chance
for so many participants to practice performing the trick simultaneously.
Today's event is part practice and part memorial; it will honor
Sacramento's Darrell Dean Conner, a racer and drifter who died of cancer in
August. He was 26.
Drifting registration costs $40 per car. The event, which was
scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., is $10 for spectators.
