UPDATED: American Canyon Man Dead After Arnold Drive Collision

When the Ford Explorer turned south, it broadsided the cyclist; the impact flung man and vehicle into a gully past the lane's west shoulder.

A 31-year-old motorcyclist was killed this morning after a collision at Arnold Drive and Walnut Avenue, according to reports from the California Highway Patrol.

The cyclist, who CHP officials identified as Juan Carlos Pena, was airlifted by Reach Air Ambulance to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The crash happened when Roberino Pio, 66, was making a left turn from Walnut onto Arnold in his 1996 Ford Explorer shortly before 6 a.m.

Pio reportedly failed to yield for the northbound motorcycle and the vehicles collided, according to the California Highway Patrol. The impact from the crash flung the motorcycle and its rider into a gully past the lane's west shoulder.

CHP reports say that the motorcyclist, who rode a 2006 Honda Shadow, was driving roughly the speed limit.
