Santa Rosa Man Was Fatally Stabbed By Ex-Girlfriend's Lover: Cops

A man killed in a fight has been identified as a 38-year-old Santa Rosa resident. Two brothers are being held on suspicion of his murder.

SANTA ROSA, CA — Santa Rosa police have identified a man who was fatally stabbed Wednesday evening as Shaun Avila, 38. Police arrested two brothers, Johnny Luis Martinez, 20, and Gabriel Cardin-Heredia, 25, of Santa Rosa, in Tracy on Thursday, police Lt. John Cregan said.

The men were booked under no bail in Sonoma County Jail Thursday night on suspicion of murder and are scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon in Sonoma County Superior Court.

The stabbing happened during a fight between Avila and the two suspects around 7:45 p.m. in the 1200 block of Slater Street. There was bad blood between Avila and Martinez, who is dating a woman who is the mother of Avila's child, police Sgt. Josh Ludtke said.

Avila, a Santa Rosa resident, was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital where he died. Police said Martinez and Cardin-Heredia left Santa Rosa in a Chevrolet Equinox.
