The San Marino City Council is considering whether residents should be allowed to own chickens for personal urban farming purposes. What do you think?

San Marino may soon join South Pas in allowing residents to own chickens.

The this month ordered a staff report on the subject in response to a request from resident Pam King, who has a home with solar panels, a drought-resistant yard and an urban farm to which she now would like to add some chickens, the Pasadena Sun reported.

South Pasadena, among other San Gabriel Valley cities, allow residents to keep fowl but under strict guidelines.

In South Pas, a resident can host up to twelve chickens or fifty fowl under four months old.

At the San Marino City Council's direction, staff employees charged with researching the issue will pay particular attention to the following, according to the Sun:

  • Number of chickens to allow
  • Discouraging commercial gain 
  • Possibly requiring a chicken permit
