Silent Witnesses: Children of the Holocaust

A one-woman play written and performed by Stephanie Satie, "Silent Witnesses'' is based on interviews and conversations with child survivors of the Jewish Holocaust. It is Satie’s third play, and follows the critically acclaimed “Refugees” and “Coming to America.''

In 2010, Satie performed “Coming to America” as a fundraiser for a group called Child Survivors of the Holocaust, according to the South Pasadena Public Library's website. A post-performance discussion ensued about the intimate portrayals of the characters, and a few audience members revealed their candid personal stories about being childhood survivors of the Holocaust.

Many of the children had been separated from their families, and never saw them again. As adults, these women told their stories to the SHOAH Foundation, where they could be heard at the Holocaust Museum. But the details were sanitized for public consumption.

Satie recorded stories using unsanitized words.

"Silent Witnesses'' describes the lives of four women, whose stories Satie weaved together to "serve as a celebration of the human spirit,'' the website states.
