Update: AT&T Open To Selling El Centro Property

AT&T says it's working with the city to find the best use for the property at 1412/1414 El Centro.

AT&T may sell the vacant building at 1412/1414 El Centro Street across the street from  parking lot, AT&T spokesperson John Britton told Patch this month.

Although the company originally bought the property with intentions of expanding its switching facility on Mission Street, the "demand has not met the forecast," said Britton.

"We will continue to work with the city to determine the best use for the property," he continued.

In 2006, AT&T requested a Conditional Use Permit for the expansion of a parking lot that would have provided seven more parking spaces for the employees at its Mission Street switching facility.

While the Planning Commission denied the permit, AT&T continued to demolish a home on the property. The commercial building, however, was kept in tact and has been vacant since then.

Prior to AT&T's ownership, the building served as a barber shop, a flower shop, and South Stampadena—a business that sold rubber stamps, ink pads and office supplies.

Most recently,  set up an office there to display a model of the downtown project.

City staff told Patch in April that if AT&T wanted to lease the building, it would have to go through the Public Utilities Commission to get it declared surplus.
