Whiz Kid: Catching up with Senior Sara Charney

Sara Charney is involved with just about everything from tennis to theater. That's why she's this week's Whiz Kid.

After watching her brother Benjamin play tennis for years, South Pas senior Sara Charney decided she'd give it a shot as a middle schooler.

"I did gymnastics, but my brother was more into tennis," said Charney. "I started the year before high school, because I wanted to make the varsity team as a freshman.

She practiced a ton, and, not surprisingly, her hard work paid off. She made the varsity team and has been a valuable player ever since.

But that's not where her talents end. She's also involved with drama and can play the guitar. "My twin brother and I started a band. We are always singing together. He plays the keyboard, and I play the guitar," she said.

Currently, they’re working on a song they were asked to write for their cousin's wedding and hope to record a CD soon. It's called The Perfect Song. And yes, you guessed it: it's about trying to write the perfect song.

At Occidental College next year, she'll be double-majoring in music as well as diplomacy and world affairs. Plus, she's going to give the Glee Club a shot. Glee Club, huh? I had to ask, does she watch the show?

"I have to record it, because I have no time during the week. It's so fun to watch," she said.

Much of Charney's interests have been a product of her parents.

"I've always been interested in history and language," said Charney. "My mom speaks four languages fluently—even though she'll probably only admit to speaking three. My dad is a history buff."

In addition to his interest in history, Charney's father Joseph is an actor and singer. “My dad wrote a screenplay for fun when he was young. We would do backyard plays and all those thing when I was growing up,” she recalls.

As for her interest in world affairs, she hopes to speak Spanish and French in the near future.
