Poll: Have We Reached Gender Equality in Sports?

As the closing ceremony marks the end of the spectacular summer Olympic Games XXX, America can rejoice in the Herculean efforts of our athletes—and our impressive medal count.

But notably, the medal count for American women is nearly double that of the male athletes. As of Friday, the women have won nearly twice as many medals: 100 total medals to 59 for the men, according to NPR. Plus there are more female athletes than males competing in this year’s Games.

It has been 40 years since the passage of Title IX, the Equal Opportunity in Education Act, which is largely applied to prohibiting gender discrimination in school sports. Since then, women have been making strides on the court, field and arena, encouraging young girls to reach their dreams of athletic prowess just like their male classmates.
