Leadership change at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco hospital
New Physician in Chief Edward Kao, MD, leads 350 physicians at the Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco Medical Center

Edward Kao, MD, is the new physician in chief at the Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco Medical Center. He will lead and oversee the physicians and clinical care delivery operations that serve patients and members in South San Francisco.
Kao, a radiologist, joined Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco in 2009. He became the chief of Radiology in 2011, where he helped to increase access to high-quality care for members and patients. In 2017, Kao was promoted to assistant physician in chief overseeing performance improvement, care experience, and specialty care access.
“I look forward to continuing the exceptional work taking place at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco as we continue to focus on providing high-quality, safe care to our patients, members, and the communities we serve,” Kao said. “Our phenomenal team of physicians and clinical specialists are advancing our mission every day as we continue to increase access to care in our local community.”

Kao graduated from Stanford University with a degree in biological sciences and received his medical degree from the University of California, Davis.
Kao follows John Skerry, MD, as physician in chief. Dr. Skerry, an ophthalmologist at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco, held the role since 2012 and will return to his clinical practice.
