More than 20 officers from law enforcement agencies throughout San Mateo County will join forces on Wednesday to increase traffic safety awareness, with a focus on protecting pedestrians.
Four recent pedestrian deaths have brought to light the need for more safety measures, Burlingame police Sgt. Jay Kiely said.
Employing the county's S.T.E.P., or San Mateo County Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program, the collaborative law enforcement team will saturate central San Mateo County -- specifically the cities of San Mateo, Foster City and Burlingame.
The San Mateo Police Department has also begun conducting pedestrian safety seminars throughout the city, specifically tailored to senior citizens and offering ways to avoid being injured, according to Kiely.
A previous S.T.E.P. enforcement in May in the cities of Pacifica, San Bruno and South San Francisco consisted of 21 officers from various county agencies. The deployment resulted in more than 200 citations for unsafe driving.
