Fatal Police Shooting In San Mateo County Under Investigation: Police

Three police officers shot a man after he pointed what they thought was a gun at them, police said.

Police said Andrew Mate, 38, of Ohio, was killed after pointing a fake gun at officers.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the South San Francisco Police department received calls about a man in his 40s yelling obscenities and attempting to break into a public bathroom with a metal object near the 300 block of Oyster Point Boulevard, police said.

When police from multiple departments arrived, they said they found a man still attempting to break into the bathroom. Officers approached him and he refused to identify himself and fled on foot with what they said was a firearm in his hand.

Police said they attempted to subdue him with less-lethal force when the suspect pointed a gun at them, and two officers from the SSFPD and one officer from the San Bruno Police Department shot him. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, police said.

Officers discovered that the gun was a replica, police said.

The suspect has not been identified and no officers or bystanders were injured, police said.

State prosecutors will investigate the shooting. The officers involved in the shooting are on paid leave, police said.
