SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Peninsula gun owners will have a chance this weekend to exchange unwanted firearms — with no questions asked — during San Mateo County's latest gun buyback event.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office has partnered with the Colma, Daly City, San Bruno, and South San Francisco police departments to host the May 4 event, offering $50 to $200 cash for all firearms handed over.

"Gun buyback events provide an anonymous option for community members to turn in firearms they no longer wish to keep," said Sheriff Christina Corpus. "This not only reduces the number of guns in circulation, but also helps prevent tragic accidents involving firearms, contributing to a safer community for all residents."

Beyond removing unwanted firearms from the community, officials said gun buybacks offer law enforcement a chance to share information with residents about safe storage and other key gun safety practices.

San Mateo County's gun buyback program is funded by a mix of funds from Measure K, the sheriff's office budget and the Citizens for a San Mateo County Gun Buy Back community group. The county has collected more than 2,600 firearms through the program to date.
