First Graders at Carpenter Seek Help for School Project

First grade teacher Nick Glover at Carpenter Community Charter needs help with project:

My Students: At 6, students are eager to share their knowledge. The problem is that not everyone can be heard. Until now! White boards are the cheapest, most low-tech, yet effective way for all to be "heard". Each child can respond instantly and these can be seen by me for assessment and participation level.

We are an affiliated charter public school with a solid reputation for academic prowess. My students are eager to learn, hungry for knowledge, and destined to be our future leaders. My goal and challenge is to keep them motivated and moving forward on their upward trajectory that will hopefully propel them through the K-12 system and onto Higher Education.

My Project: Without the funds to supply each student with a laptop or tablet of some sort, I have thought of an extremely low-tech, cost-effective, yet highly-motivating method to facilitate learning. Individual white boards will enable all students to answer questions and contribute to class discussions collectively. With no paper waste, this is an ideal environmental approach as well. The white boards can be used for rough drafts before they publish work. The highly portable white boards will also enable students to work wherever they are comfortable and can even be taken outside. The durable nature of the boards means this will be a purchase that will benefit future students as well.

This is a simple, yet effective means to engage, assess, and motivate my first grade students. It will permit all to have a say at the same time. It will also help minimize the typical calling out and "oooh, ooohs" whilst hands are raised! White boards are the biggest bang for the buck that I can imagine
