Homeless At Sportsmen's Lodge Ask To Stay As Program Ends: Report

People living at the hotel through Project Roomkey hope to stay until they can move to permanent housing, rather than return to shelters.

A Project Roomkey program at the Sportsmen's Lodge is set to end July 24. Its residents have the option to move to a shelter, but said in a letter that they have experienced harassment, theft, physical violence and sexual abuse at shelters in the past.

STUDIO CITY, CA — A Project Roomkey program at the Sportsmen's Lodge hotel is set to close this month – and its residents are asking to stay until they can move into motel rooms or permanent housing, the Los Angeles Daily News reported.

The Project Roomkey program is set to end on July 24 at 11 a.m., KnockLA reported, and the Sportsmen's Lodge residents have the option to be placed in a shelter. However, the residents are concerned that they could be forced to live on the street again if a shelter is their only option, according to the Daily News.

"We do not consider congregate shelter to be a safe, acceptable form of housing," the residents said in a demand letter issued last week. "During the time we have spent in shelters, we experienced harassment, theft, physical violence, sexual abuse, assault, and increased anxiety and depression and have no desire to return to those conditions."
