Retirement Isn’t Sitting Well with 84-Year-Old Former Principal

He’s restless. He still has a lot to give. But, no one will even look at him.

, 84, the former principal at in the Cahuenga Pass, said retirement so far, has been a bore.

A little over a year ago, Klein who worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District for 54 years, was. Recently, Patch caught up with him to see how he was settling in.

 “I hate it, I want to get back into the classroom,” he said. “I have sent out my resume everywhere, but I’m just too old.”

Klein says he is still in great health, and has a lot to offer. But retirement just doesn’t sit well with him.

“I don’t have any hobbies, there isn’t anything I’m interested in doing,” Klein said. “I don’t golf, there isn’t anywhere I care to travel to.”

Although Klein and his wife, cookbook author traveled to Saint Petersburg in Russia this past spring, he doesn’t have a “bucket list” of places he wants to visit.

Klein is a licensed educational psychologist, and he said he is good with helping elementary school children with their studies and with some of their schoolwork.

“I can help them improve on district tests, and I can let parents know what the needs are for a specific grade level,” the former principal said.

A longtime Beverly Hills resident, Klein said he is licensed to teach in the LAUSD and Beverly Hills school districts and can work with special needs children.  He said he is willing to travel throughout the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles area.

Parents in the Studio City and Hollywood area at the school for more than a year, but then LAUSD faced budget cuts. Although he met with promises of jobs to keep him active after his forced retirement, Klein said none of them materialized. 

On a recent visit back to Valley View, teachers and students greeted him warmly. One of the teachers he hired, Nancy Gorman in a fourth grade class, told him that she's retiring now after 35 years.

The students were excited about his return. "I think I'm going to faint," one second-grader said when seeing his former principal.

"I'm a little embarassed," Klein said. "I didn't want to be disruptive when coming back to say hello to the school. But it's nice that they still remember me."
