Studio City Mom, Susan McMartin, Tells Her Dramatic Story to 'Dr. Drew'

She took calls from people across the country who identified with her.

Susan McMartin, who writes the column for Studio City Patch appeared on Dr. Drew Pinsky's show Dr. Drew on Thursday night and bravely told her story about growing up with an alcoholic mother.

"My mom, by day was my hero," McMartin said. "I didn't know how to juggle those two personalities."

She wrote a book,, which was excerpted on Patch and became the catalyst for her appearing on the HLN show. She also talked about reading her book to people of all ages, from 10 year olds to adults.

Her, was OK with Susan's public discussion, and she was on the phone during the show. She got sober at the age of 72 and is now 81.

On the show, McMartin talked about how her upbringing affected her whole life, and her relationships, which has been fodder for . She said, "I have become very controlling."

McMartin talked about how she read her book at a juvenile hall and was surrounded by gangbangers and when she asked who among them had a drug addict in their household every single one of them raised their hand.

McMartin said she will be writing about her experience at her regular column which appears Mondays on Patch.
