SOLANO COUNTY, CA -- A kitchen fire caused an estimated $55,000 in damage at a single-family home in Fairfield the morning of Jan. 30, a battalion chief said.

The fire in the 500 block of San Marco Street started around 9:20 a.m. when a woman, who was cooking hash browns in oil on a stove, left to check on her young son, Fairfield Fire Battalion Chief Matt Luckenbach said.

The oil caught fire and ignited kitchen cabinets. The fire burned the kitchen and sent smoke throughout the house.
