Loyalty to Nation: An Islamic Imperative
Being Muslim and being patriotic are not mutually exclusive.

In an age of rising nationalism and shifting global loyalties, Muslims are often caught in a false dilemma: faith or country. Yet this misunderstands both Islam and patriotism. Islam not only permits loyalty to one’s homeland, it demands it.
The Quran affirms this principle through the words of Prophet Joseph; upon attaining power in Egypt, worked to protect and develop his adopted nation. He said: “Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. Indeed, I will be a knowing guardian” (Quran 12:55). Joseph did not see a contradiction between his identity as a believer and his responsibility to serve the land in which he lived. He sought its stability, managed its economy, and safeguarded its people. This verse is a profound example of how religious devotion aligns with national service.
Historically, Muslims have lived as loyal citizens in diverse empires and modern states, contributing to their prosperity and defending them in times of need. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) established the Constitution of Medina. This document recognized the Muslims, Jews, and pagans of Medina as "one nation," bound by mutual responsibilities and defense, exemplifying loyalty to one's nation.
