Massive Closings, Liquidation Sales: What To Know About Joann Stores

CALIFORNIA — Nearly all Joann fabric and craft stores in California are liquidating their inventory and closing following the company's bankruptcy news — and big sales are expected.

According to the retailer's online store locator, 61 of California's 75 Joann locations are now labeled "liquidation stores." (See the 61 store locations below.)

The remaining 14 stores in Clovis, Covina, El Cajon, Laguna Niguel, La Habra, Los Angeles, Modesto, National City, Rancho Cucamonga, Roseville, San Jose, Santa Maria, Thousand Oaks and Visalia appear to have survived the company's mass brick-and-mortar shutdown.

As part of the ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring process announced earlier this year, Hudson, Ohio-based Joann said Friday that it received court approval to begin closing approximately 500 stores across the nation, which appears to include the 61 in California.

"Right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward for Joann. We anticipate the store closures to occur over the next few months, although some stores may close within a shorter or longer time period," according to a company statement.

It's unclear how low prices will drop on Joann merchandise, such as fabric, sewing accessories, and arts and crafts offerings. The company is currently promoting steep product discounts through its e-commerce site.

It's the second time in less than a year that Joann started Chapter 11 proceedings. The company also did so in March 2024 but emerged a month later as a private company and managed to keep its stores open.

Joann has more than 800 stores across 49 states, as well as its e-commerce business.

In a statement, the 82-year-old retailer cited sluggish sales and inventory problems for the latest bankruptcy filing, but optimism continues that a buyer will emerge for the beleaguered retailer.

In a Jan. 15 statement, Joann Interim CEO Michael Prendergast said, "We hope that this [bankruptcy] process enables us to find a path that would allow Joann to continue operating as a going concern."

Boston-based Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, LLC, was announced as the "stalking horse" bidder for Joann, but the retailer is continuing to seek alternate offers. A stalking horse bid sets a floor to avoid subsequent lowball offers.

In the meantime, Joann said Friday that it is committed to providing its customers "with great service and assortments."

The company also said it will support "our thousands of team members across the nation throughout this process."

It's not clear how many Joann employees will lose their jobs due to the planned store closures.
