Police Investigate Early-Morning Burglary at Chaparral High School

One suspect was in custody and one outstanding in connection with an alleged burglary Monday morning at Chaparral High School.

Sometime around 4 a.m. Monday, two male suspects allegedly broke into the administration building at the campus at 27215 Nicolas Road, said Temecula police Sgt. Kevin McDonald. The sergeant said a burglary alarm alerted authorities to the activity.

Officers located one of the suspects and were interviewing him in hopes of locating the other one, McDonald told Patch just after 10 a.m. Because the case was actively under investigation, he did not provide suspect descriptions. He expected the first suspect to be jailed shortly.

Electronics were believed to have been taken, and glass smashed in the process, district and law enforcement officials said.

The break-in caused the closure of the administration building while a sheriff’s forensics team collected evidence such as fingerprints.

At 6:30 a.m., several police vehicles were still on scene, as was the forensics  vehicle.

Police tape had been removed but was lying nearby.

When reached at about 9:30 a.m., Temecula Valley Unified School District Spokeswoman Melanie Norton said she believed the building had been reopened to staff.

There was no current threat to students or staff and the school day was proceeding as normal, Norton said.

More information about the incident would likely be released later in the day, McDonald said.
