Temecula's Avery Steele Builds Community Through Charity And Action
The Temecula Valley High grad founded a nonprofit 5K event, raised $7,500 for scholarships and earned Student of the Year honors in 2024.

Temecula Valley High School graduate Avery Steele (Class of 2024) was named a 2024 Student of the Year by the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce, thanks to her remarkable initiative, civic leadership, and academic excellence.
Per Valley News, Avery was nominated for Student of the Month earlier in the school year by her AP Government teacher for her leadership in the California Seal of Civic Engagement Program. When the isolation of the pandemic weighed heavily on her mental health, Avery decided to “be the change” and rebuild community spirit through something she loved—running.
In her freshman year, she launched a virtual 5K event and founded a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Sun Run, to manage its funds and mission. The event raised over $7,500 to support scholarships that help students pursue higher education without the burden of debt.
At the time of her award, Avery was working on a second civic project to raise awareness for animal rescues and shelters. She is also a piano player and a standout athlete in water polo and tennis who balances her schedule with ambitious community projects that aim to make a lasting impact.
Principal Donna Lione praised Avery as “optimistic, intelligent and gritty,” and Avery encourages other students to “do it all.” Whether through athletics, academics, or advocacy, she embodies the spirit of leadership and service.
The future is certainly looking bright in Temecula! If you know another Star Student making an impact, nominate them today to be featured on Patch!
