11 Arrested in Protest Over Officer-Involved Shooting in Hayward

The man who was fatally shot by police officers has not yet been identified.

HAYWARD — A vigil for a man who was shot and killed by Hayward police after he reversed his car toward officers turned into a protest that ended with 11 arrests Monday night, a Hayward police sergeant said.

Sgt. Mark Ormsby said a group of 50 to 70 people gathered around 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of East 13th Street and Tennyson Road for a vigil.

Ormsby said the group started putting roadblocks into the roadway and police broke up the crowd. A short time later, the group congregated again at the intersection of Franklin and Culp avenues, according to police. They began placing couches in the roadway and were dispersed again, police said.

Police arrested 11 adults involved in the protest, Ormsby said.

Ormsby said that officers normally allow those gathering in remembrance of a loved one to have their moment for their friend or family member, but this time it got out of hand.

The officer-involved shooting occurred after police responded to reports of a shooting at the Dirty Bird Lounge, a bar located at 29308 Mission Boulevard, just before 1 a.m. on Monday.

The victim in the bar shooting was taken to a hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound, and has since been released, police said.

Officers investigating that shooting learned that the shooter had fled and was said to be driving a dark-colored Buick or Cadillac. They searched the area and found a car matching that description on Tennyson Road, west of Mission Boulevard, police said.

While the officers were attempting to make contact with the driver, he allegedly reversed his car toward them and police shot the driver, killing him, police said.

Police have not yet released the name of the man who was killed.
